"Salt to the Sea"

Updated: Apr 27, 2021

Have you ever heard of this historical shipwreck?

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys is a YA historical fiction novel about a few young people trying to get to safety during WWII. They end up making it to a German ship called the Wilhelm Gustloff, which just happens to be one of the most devasting maritime tragedies of all time. Unfortunately, not many people know of the ship sinking or the many lives lost.

Mothers tried hurling their infants to passengers up on deck, but they couldn’t throw high enough. Their babies smashed against the side of the ship and plunged into the sea.

Overall, the story and the characters were, okay. The characters were very one-dimensional and there wasn't much to them so I wasn't completely attached to them when things started to go wrong. However, I did cry a bit at the very end but I don't want to spoil anything.

I read this one with my book club and we all kind of felt the same way. I ended up rating this one 3/5 stars because I didn't hate it but the writing could have been a lot better.
