Divergent by Veronica Roth is a Sci-Fi Dystopian YA novel that is set in what is left of Chicago. It follows the character Beatrice (Tris) Prior who starts in one of the five factions of this world called Abnegation (the selfless). The other factions are Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice has to make the decision to stay with her faction or leave it for another. This choice will change her life forever.
I quite like this book. I hadn't read a dystopian YA novel since The Hunger Games back when they were popular in like 2012 (besides the new one but we'll talk about that in another review). However, it reminded me a bit of The Hunger Games because spoiler alert she picks Dauntless and has to train just like they train in The Hunger Games. It is different types of training though so I was able to stay invested in the book and the characters had intrigue and charm. The dynamic between Tris and Four (her trainer) seems a bit forced in my opinion and the other initiates are a bit, bland. But all in all, it was cohesive to an extent.
The one thing I did not like (more spoilers) is that the world was built up and everything was explained in such detail and everything just to bring everything to the ground in the last like 40 pages of the book. I feel like this book could have been shortened tremendously and had many parts left out because in the end in my opinion they did not seem that important.
I will definitely go on to the next novel of this trilogy but I'm going to give myself a break from it for maybe about a few weeks or a month. I do want to know what happens. But in the meantime, I rented the movie so I'll see how that compares. Maybe I'll do a little update on what I thought of the movie compared to the book! Update: The movie was terrible. Don't watch it.
